You would expect a railroad, where "big jobs" are done every day, to have really "big tools" to work with. At this moment fire fighters are battling the Sheep Fire wildfire just south of Glacier National Park along US Highway 2 in Montana.
The fire fighters are getting some "big" assistance. Railroads have to be ready to fight fires along their own right-of-way. BNSF Railway has developed unique trains especially designed to fight fires. The trains contain two tenders with 30,000 gallon tanks of water, a fire car with aqueous fire fighting foam, and a caboose that serves as a Command Car.
So how is BNSF Railway helping to fight this huge fire? In rough terrain the railroad is shuttling fire fighters to the fire and removing these folks at the end of their shift. The special trains are able to bring huge amounts of water onsite to directly fight the fires. The special train is also bringing in heavy equipment to aid the fire fighters and removing timber as the fire fighters create a fire break. BNSF is also bringing in 16,000 gallon tanks of fire retardant to the refilling stations for the helicopters. Note on some days due to the winds the helicopters could not fly that made the BNSF the major supplier of water, flame retardant, and other supplies.
Sure, railroads like BNSF Railway carry America's heavy loads. It is wonderful to see them carry a heavy load for fire fighers in Montana. YourToyTrains salutes the fire fighters, and the BNSF crews that are supporting them, who are real heros. Pray for these folks as they risk their lives to save forest lands and wildlife in very isolated terrain.
