YourToyTrains- Model Trains. How we love trains!
In 1862, during the Civil War,, the City of Corinth, Mississippi, was a vital rail crossroads. The east-west line- the Memphis & Charleston- was the main rail route connecting the Confederate West to the Confederate East. In April of that year the huge Battle of Shiloh was fought near by, essentially a battle for this vital rail crossroads. Thousands of men died- both the Blue and the Gray- and eventually Union forces cut that vital rail line.
But advance the story to 2018. Norfolk Southern Railway still uses this route as its vital east-west rail line. The horror of battle long over, trains on this route travel unimpeded from the former Northern States to the former Southern States. The commerce moving on the old Memphis & Charleston at this moment dwarfs Civil War traffic.
Railroads vital to US History? Of course. Still vital today? Yes. Very much so. (Photo- Empty BNSF unit coal train on Norfolk Southern Railway at Grand Junction, Tennessee)- the old Memphis & Charleston line)
