YourToyTrains salutes a great railroader, Mr. William Van Horne. A protege of Canadian born James J. Hill who initially had a financial interest in the Canadian Pacific Railway, Mr Van Horne from Illinois became CP's General Manager in 1881. In the four years between 1881 and 1885 Mr. Van Horne lead the Canadian Pacific Railway in its building of the first transcontinental railroad across Canada- and in the process conquered the massive Canadian Rockies and seemingly inpenetrable Selkirk Mountains. This former American became one of Canada's leading men of the 19th Century. He loved his new country and would live the rest of his life in his adopted homeland.
