I love to watch trains. Back on August 11, 2005, I was along the Norfolk Southern Railway main line in South Bend, Indiana. This route is the famous former New York Central Main Line from New York to Chicago. After a short wait I see this eastbound train rolling by the platform of the old passenger depot (now closed). Funny thing. A young man, clearly lower income and somewhat down on his luck, was staggering not far from the train (not in the picture, though)- he looked to be very drunk. I became concerned he might get struck by the train, but he staggered out of the way. Safe!
In a few minutes the South Bend Police pulled up, sirens blasting and lights flashing. They got out of their car and were looking at me very suspiciously. The engineer had called the police and told them someone was very near the track. The police started to inquire what I was doing by the tracks- the drunk guy was no where to be seen.....oops...just then I saw he had fallen over in a field of grass just off to the left of this picture. The police had their man and I was free to enjoy South Bend. Another close call! Clyde Smith President YourToyTrains
