YourToyTrains- Model Trains- We love everything about trains! And how this vital industry has contributed to the American culture. In 1893 Katharine Lee Bates, an English professor at Wellesley College, had taken a trip to Colorado Springs, CO. Besides the Columbian Exposition in Chicago (Alabaster cities gleam) the crossing by train of the Great Plains of Kansas inspired her "Amber waves of grain" words. But it was taking the Manitou & Pike's Peak Railway to the top of Pike's Peak- which my Dad and I duplicated in July 2008, that really inspired Katherine to write the wonderful poem whose words were put to music in the classic patriotic song "America The Beautiful". Inspired on a train!
