YourToyTrains- Model Trains website- is of course fascinated with railroad history. It is well known President James Garfield (the recent PBS American Experience series) was assassinated in 1881. When he was shot in Washington, DC, his wife Lucretia and their daughter Mollie were at the Jersey Shore resort of Elberon, NJ. The mighty Pennsylvania Railroad, already a huge corporation, took on the task of rushing Mrs. Garfield and her child to Washington to be with her husband, at that time badly wounded. After taking Lucretia and Mollie to Monmouth Junction, NJ (the main line), the Garfields found a special train awaiting them- a locomotive and a single Pullman car.Just like a Hollywood movie the mighty Pennsylvania had stopped all trains from Monmouth Junction to Washington, and the engineer of this special train blasted across New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland at speeds of over 60 mph. While not sounding so fast today, in 1881 that was rolling. Alas, at Bowie, MD, 20 miles south of Baltimore, the engine's steel engine rod had sheared- and without the expert engineer slamming on the brakes and bringing the train to a stop it might have derailed with unknown consequences, perhaps the death of the First Lady and child. Of course a second locomotive was immediately dispatched, and Lucretia and Mollie joined her ailing husband in Washington DC, still is record time.
