YourToyTrains- Model Trains website- suggests Gainesville, Texas as a great place to spend a day train-watching. The Fort Worth Division of the BNSF Railway operates 20 or more trains a day on this Kansas City-Oklahoma City-Fort Worth Main Line. Trains are very diverse and include general merchandise (Manifest), unit coal, unit autorack, unit oil, unit grain, and we have even seen trainloads of the giant windmills. Amtrak's Heartland Flyer stops at Gainesville twice a day. The former Santa Fe Depot along California Street offers public parking, a small railroad museum, the Amtrak depot, and includes public drinking fountains, television, and rest rooms.
We suggest The Fried Pie Company for lunch and The Main Street Pub and Steakhouse for dinner. Caution! We learned the hard way both are closed Sundays. Local folks told us Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest days for BNSF.
