YourToyTrains- Model Railroads- notes the small unassuming little town of Sierra Blanca, Texas, between El Paso and Van Horn on Interstate 10 was once the site of a big happening. Collis Huntington was building his Southern Pacific Railroad eastward with plans to reach New Orleans. Jay Gould was building the Texas & Pacific westward from Fort Worth towards San Diego. In 1881, 12 years after the first Transcontinental railroad opened, the second Transcontinental Railroad met- the SP and the T&P- right here in Sierra Blanca. Huntington went on to reach New Orleans. Gould never built west beyond Sierra Blanca. Such are the fortunes of war.
