YourToyTrains, a leading website for Model Train products, recommends a visit to the Olde Hickory Station Restaurant in Hickory, NC. If you live in the Piedmont Region of the Carolinas, a trip to Hickory will be well worth your time. The restaurant is located in the former Southern Railway Passenger Station, and has historic photos and prints of Hickory's railroad heritage on the walls. Inside, the restaurant area has huge windows that face the Norfolk Southern Railway line, an active rail line serving Hickory. Patio seating for us railfans is right by the tracks. In addition, the restaurant has a very nice bar to add a special amenity. The menu features a diverse variety of local favorites, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You just can't go wrong with the "Peaches and Pork"- a 10 ounce bone-in pork chop with a peach-flavored barbecue sauce. Delicious.
In addition to a nice restored downtown with small shops, nearby Lake Hickory provides recreational activities. The Harper House Historic Home and Hickory History Center is also close by, and the Oakwood Historic District offers many lovely homes, including the Propst House which is also open for visits. Enjoy Hickory!
