YourToyTrains salutes Mr. Robert Krebs,one of the great railroaders of the 20th Century. Starting a career with the Cotton Belt in 1971 in Pine Bluff, AR, Krebs knowledge of railroading and leadership ability moved him rapidly up the ranks of railroad management.
In one famous story Krebs was riding on the Southern Pacific's hottest train, the Blue Streak Merchandise, at Dupo,IL, which a Missouri Pacific dispatcher delayed for 43 minutes. Exasperated by the delay, Krebs had the MoPac's DE, a hot train, held up for exactly 43 minutes at Dexter, MO. Missouri Pacific got the message.
Robert Krebs advanced to become President of Southern Pacific (Cotton Belt's parent) and later he was hired away by Southern Pacific's stillborn merger partner Santa Fe. Krebs lead the Santa Fe very successfully, achieving outstanding results and being recognized as one of the best railroad managers in the business. When Santa Fe merged with Burlington Northern in 1995, Krebs and the Santa Fe management was the point team in implementing a very successful merger. He retired from Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway in 2002 as Chairman of the Board.
