The Lionel O Scale Train Master Diesel Locomotive Jersey Central models the Fairbanks Morse H-24-66 "Train Master" diesel locomotive manufactured by Fairbanks Morse in the 1950s. The Train Masters were hood type road switchers, more flexible in reverse operations than the cab units they replaced. The opposed piston design prime mover, six axle locomotive, could produce 2,400 hp. With ElectroMotive Division dominating the diesel market, FM only produced 127 units of the H-24-66 locomotives from 1953-57. Fairbanks Morse: Thaddeus Fairbanks opened an iron foundry in St. Johnsbury, VT, in 1823. Mr. Fairbanks' invention of the platform scale became the basis for a very diversified manufacturing company. The company built diesel engines for the US Navy in World War II, which lead FM into the locomotive business. In 1945, with wartime production restrictions lifted, Fairbanks Morse introduced diesel cab units- right at the time railroads were converting from steam to diesel. With ElectroMotive Division's huge head start, FM was never able to be a major player in the diesel locomotive market. In 1958 production ceased.
Road Name and History:
Central Railroad of New Jersey: The Elizabethtown & Somerville Railroad was chartered in 1831 to build a railroad from New York Bay to the New Jersey interior. In 1847 the Somerville & Easton Railroad was chartered to continue building the route west. In 1849 the two companies were consolidated to form the Central Railroad of New Jersey (Jersey Central Lines). Finally in 1855 a bridge across the Delaware River enabled the Jersey Central to enter Easton, PA. The railroad grew in 1873 with the purchase of the New York & Long Branch to reach the Jersey Shore and in 1917 many small New Jersey railroads were merged in to the Jersey Central. In 1901 the Jersey Central came under the control of the Reading Railroad- it remained in the Reading Family until 1976 when, with both carriers being bankrupt, both were merged in to Conrail.
Historic Fact: In 1924 the first commercially successful dieselelectric locomotive, built by the American Locomotive Company, was in service on the Jersey Central.
