Lionel Lines: Inventor Joshua Lionel Cowen founded Lionel in 1900 in New York City. He built his first model train as a window display to draw children into toy stores. With the US in 1900 fascinated with trains and the idea of electricity, at that time a new idea, the model railroad business took off. By 1906 preassembled track and a selection of locomotives and rolling stock already had the model train industry resembling the industry of today. Based on the quality and accuracy of its products, Lionel was the best known model train manufacturer throughout the 20th Century, and is still an iconic name known to millions of people. Lionel sold their model train franchise to General Mills in 1969. Purchased by investor Richard P. Kughn in 1986, in 1995 the company was renamed Lionel, LLC. The new owners continue the tradition of making some of the most beloved model trains in the world.
