The Lionel O Scale 6-25962 Poultry Car Happy Thanksgiving models the poultry car- with special graphics designed to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday! Similar in concept to a standard stock car, the poultry car was modified for the transport of chickens and turkeys. In 1888 the Jenkins Live Poultry Car Company, based in Chicago, was launched by William Jenkins (A former Freight Agent with the Erie) and James Streeter, a poultry dealer in Muncie, IN. They designed a revolutionary car that enabled feeding and watering of the chickens and turkeys en route, dramatically reducing loss in transport. The shipment of poultry by rail continued to be a challenge, and by the 1920s motor transport was substituted for rail.
"Happy Thanksgiving!" from Lionel: The Lionel design team has created this holiday poultry car to celebrate Thanksgiving. With "Happy Thanksgiving" and "Thanksgiving Express Delivery" emblazoned on the car's sides these cars will make a great conversation piece rolling around your O Gauge model train layout during the Thanksgiving holiday. As poultry traffic was diverted to truck, railroads attempted to remain in this business by operating "Turkey Specials"- special trains for the movement of large numbers of turkeys during the Thanksgiving holiday season. So this uniquely designed poultry car does hearken back to another era. Happy Thanksgiving!
