YourToyTrains is proud to offer an exact replica, manufactured by Bachmann, of the Union Pacific #119 which was present at the Golden Spike Ceremony in 1869. It had been a dream since the 1840s to unite the country by a transcontinental railroad, but due to the size of the country and the land being wilderness many people scoffed at the idea. Jealousies between North and South before the Civil War also complicated this great national project. Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railroad Act in 1862, which created the Union Pacific Railroad and designated the Central Pacific Railroad the company to build east from California. Union Pacific built west from Omaha, Nebraska Territory. The Act created a race between the two companies for land and government subsidies, so in typical American fashion hurdles like lack of water, difficult terrain, mountain ranges, Indian tribes, and many more were overcome as the new rail line opened up land for settlement and created new cities in the West. On May 10, 1869, the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific finally met at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory. The news of the completion of this great national project set off celebrations all over the country- parades, church bells ringing, even the Liberty Bell was rang in Philadelphia. A great National epic dream had been realized.
