The Story of Thomas:
The Anglican (Church of England) cleric, childrens' author, and railway enthusiast Wilbert Awdry wrote the Thomas the Tank Engine books starting in 1943 to entertain his son Christopher who had come down with the measles. Based on actual British locomotives and rolling stock, the character Thomas first appeared in Awdry's writings in 1946. In 1979, British producer Britt Allcroft discovered the Thomas The Tank Engine books that he used as the basis for a television show. Eventually airing all over the world, Thomas and his Friends have delighted children everywhere for almost 40 years.
Historical Note: As noted above each Thomas & Friends product models an actual piece of equipment once used on the railways of Great Britain. "GWR" would be the initials of the Great Western Railway, one of the "Big Four" private companies that was nationalized in 1948 to form British Rail.
