The Bachmann HO Silver 89' Full Dome McKinley Explorer Chena 1052 models the 89' Full Dome Passenger Cars built by Colorado Railcar between 1988 and 2007. Based on full domes designed for the Santa Fe in the 1950s by the Budd Company, Colorado Railcar built these full dome cars as specified by the tourist operator. McKinley Explorer along with Royal Celebrity (owned by cruise lines) and the Alaska Railroad purchased these full dome cars- all the cars were used in the luxury Alaska- mainly cruise ship- tourist market. Colorado Railcar was founded in 1988 by Tom Rader as Rader Railcar. The name was changed to Colorado Railcar in 1997.Experiencing financial difficulties from which it could not recover, Colorado Railcar ceased operations in 2008.
McKinley Explorer: Westours (Referenced on this rail car- See Image) purchased Colorado Railcars' new full dome cars for service in Alaska. Westours had studied the tourist market and had concluded rail passenger service on the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Denali National Park would be profitable. Since that time Westours has become Holland America, the cruise line. Currently McKinley Explorer is a premium passenger car service owned by Holland America andPrincess cruise lines. Most of their business is cruise line passengers who travel to Denali National Park. This service by McKinley Explorer operates only to Denali National Park- service through to Fairbanks is provided by Alaska Railroad.
