Road Name and History:
Conrail: The Consolidated Rail Corporation was created in 1976 by Act of Congress to save the troubled railroads of the Northeast, mainly Penn Central but other lines as well. With aggressive pruning and the deregulation of the rail industry, the Federal corporation became an independent private company in 1987. Now a successful railroad, "Big Blue" was purchased by Norfolk Southern and CSX in 1998, restoring rail competition to the Northeast.
